Aesculus Collection

Ohio buckeye (Aesculus glabra) in flower.

South of Mumford Hall is planted with a collection of Buckeyes (Aesculus). The Missouri native Red Buckeye (Aesculus pavia) and Ohio Buckeye (Aesculus glabra) as well as the American native Yellow Buckeye (Aesculus flava) are found here. The European Horse Chestnut (Aesculus hippocastanum) and a hybrid of it and the Red Buckeye, Red Horse Chestnut (Aesculus x carnea) grow here as well as the Japanese Horse Chestnut (Aesculus turbinata). Several of the shrubby Bottle Brush Buckeye (Aesculus praviflora) fill the southeast side of Mumford Hall.

Red Buckeye (Aseculus pavia), one of the hybrid parents of Red Flowering Horsechestnut (Aesculus x carnea) bloom together in late spring.

Bottle Brush Buckeye (Aesculus paviflora) makes a spreading large shrub with white flowers and yellow fall color.
