Gardener Profiles

Experience/Education: B.S. Agriculture-Horticulture from MU

Bower worked for the Missouri Botanic Garden in St. Louis, where she was one of two people who maintained both indoor and outdoor display plants. She worked for nine years as a research specialist in MU's horticulture department before becoming a landscape gardener six years ago.

Campus territory: Bower's crew of one full-time, two temporary and one student employee maintains the majority of the annual and perennial beds on campus. They also are responsible for the Chancellor's Residence on Francis Quadrangle and the President's Residence on Providence Point.

Favorite part of your job: “I enjoy getting to see the wide variety of plants on campus,” Bower said. “I didn't know much about trees and shrubs when I started, so I've learned a lot, too.”

Favorite spot on campus: “I love the plants and architecture on Francis Quadrangle.”

Favorite plant: “I like every plant when it's looking good.”

Favorite flower: “Choosing just one is difficult, but one of the most interesting flowers is found on the paw paw tree.”

Favorite trees: Nissa Sylvatica, commonly known as the black gum or Tupelo tree

Best gardening tip: “Cultivate a lot of friends who enjoy gardening so that you can share plants with each other when they need to be separated.”
